Kuantan Trip – 15-17 August 2008

Over the recent school holidays, we went to Kuantan for 3 days hoping to get some much needed rest and do absolutely nothing.

Stayed at Hyatt Regency Teluk Chempedak. Quite a decent place considering it is 26 years old. The main lobby and dining areas have recently been refurbished together with the rooms. Worth the money that we spent unlike the crap Strawberry Park Resort.

Daddykhong had the whole trip planned out. He compiled a list of things to do and eat, places to visit from the Net and dragged us all around Kuantan.

During our previous stopover to Teluk Chempedak last year, there was a McDonalds right next to the beach. Now the Colonel has decided to open there as well. How lovely – we can’t go hungry.

We left KL at 3pm and arrived at the hotel just after 6pm. Right after we stepped out from our rooms to get to the car for dinner, it started raining cats and dogs so we decided to have buffet dinner at their lovely coffee house for a very decent RM50++ per head. Not too bad the food but the spread was not very extensive.

Day 2

We had curry laksa for breakfast at Hoi Yin just outside the hotel. Apparently they are famous for their curry laksa. It was quite tasty but not earth-shattering lah. Good enough for a repeat visit when we are in the area next time.

After breakfast we drove towards Sungai Lembing with a planned stop at Charas Cave which is about 30 km from Kuantan town. There is supposedly a sleeping Buddha there and since both Braedyn and Shayanne love their deities, it is a must-visit for us. After 30 minutes of driving through trunk roads and through oil palm plantations, we arrived.

Charas Cave

Paid RM2 for parking and RM2 per head as an entry fee for adults. To reach the entrance of the cave, you have 2 options; 130+ steps (new path) or the old 170+ step path. We went up the 130+ step path and down the 170+ steps.

Climbing the steps is not for the faint-hearted and not recommended if you have a 15kg kid with you.

The cave itself is quite run down but fairly clean. Quite dark and eerie in my opinion but daddykhong was thrilled to be off the beaten track.

After Charas Cave we continued our journey to Sungai Lembing which was famous for its underground tin mines. Apart from seeing a dead ghost town that can rival my own hometown, some tin mine tunnel entrances, a BP petrol station with no signboard and a solitary pump, there’s nothing much to do there.

We decided to head back to the hotel for some sun and sea.

Teluk Chempedak

For a public beach, it is quite clean for Malaysian standards. We thought it would be good for some time at the beach before finishing the day with a spot of swimming.

As expected, Braedyn didn’t want to go near the waves and it was only after seeing Shayanne having so much fun with daddykhong, that he hesitantly decided to join in. By the end of the beach session, he was following daddykhong down to the sea to collect water for his sand play.

After we were done with the beach, we went to 1 of the hotel’s 2 pools for some swimming. Braedyn refused to go in (has been like that since the Avillion Admiral Cove trip) and Shayanne quickly learnt how to float upright with her arm floaties. I think it will be Shayanne who will be a water baby just like daddykhong which is good so while daddykhong saves me from drowning, she can save Braedyn! :)

We ended the day with satay at Zul’s. Good stuff with friendly service.

Day 3

We were meant to check-out early and head home but in the end, we checked-out at 12 noon and took a detour to the Sungai Pandan waterfall which is located near the RMAF base in Kuantan. Spent about an hour there before finally deciding to drive home.

wuah…..so many trips and beach also!! your kids must have enjoyed them very much and did mama get sun tan?? d curry laksa looked so rich….

I’m not a beach person and not a fan of tans!

  20. The Foursome says:

after reading your journal, we decided to check out the cave or rather the sleeping buddha….we took the 130 steps up….and Ian, started screaming right in front of the cave…there was a couple before us and they seemed to disappear into the darkness….we decided to chicken out…too much for a 3+ and a “just turned 1″ boys to handle…

Yes, it does look eerie from the outside but once you are inside, things get better. Braedyn was a little apprehensive at first as well but Shayanne was eager to go in.

  21. rizal says:

hai there.. i always eat Hoi Yeen curry mee during weekends. Nice vacation. :)

  22. Jason Lee says:
